Something They Thought It Should Be by Chris Moore
Complete Your Chris Moore Initial Release Series with This Great Album for $1.00!
The last full album in Chris Moore's first release series was finally released on June 21, 2005 after many delays. School, health problems, and just bad recording luck (yes, even the best get it) seemed to haunt the early stages of this album's recorded life.
This album originally existed only as an album of words, at least that's the way it was presented a few years ago. Little did anyone else know the music that lay behind the lyrics...
The first track, and definately the stand-out track on the album, is "Marissa". Written about a fictitious person (or, is it a real person with the name changed to protect the innocent?), this song instantly became a live show staple for Chris and Jim. It's catchy chorus and high "ooh, ooh"s really grab the listener's attention to start the album.
The album contains two faith-based songs: one featuring sister Jaime (note the spelling) Moore on backing vocals, and the other ABOUT her! But hey, those two songs are only the apparent ones!
Actually, the song "Jaime Elizabeth" (now you know her middle name, too!) has probably the most interest piece of music. The "Her name is Jaime Elizabeth" line features a very interesting harmony part that just lodges itself into the brain, refusing to let go.
The album can best be described as "ambitious". The songs are still "old" Chris songs; most sentiments are taken from experiences long past. The choppy style of guitar playing (that only Chris could pull off) is in full-force here, but it does take some getting used to. But, then again, what doesn't? Only the most shallow albums show their true greatness at first listen. Heck, it took people thirty years to start appreciating "Pet Sounds"! The sounds that Chris uses, including moments of fuzz bass, weird vocal effects, and even a few stabs at harmonies, prove to the world that Chris Moore loves to record.
The true gem of this whole album, however, lies in "Iron Curtain". Even though the verses may be a little too "obvious" to try to get the analogy across (which is weird for a Chris Moore song, which is usually characterized by vague lyrics), the production value alone makes this a great gem. Actually, the slight non-Chris Moore style may stem from the fact that the song is actually a collaboration with longtime friend Alberto Distefano. The guitar line in the beginning and end of the song is great, the addition of a poem is very ambitious (but, too bad Alberto shyed away from reading on the song-it's completely written by him), and the the fact that the two parts run together (not to mention the whole song running together with the previous track as well) make this a great find.
Whatever you thought this would be, Chris's last dip into his archives (for now, at least) completes a look into the beginnings of Chris Moore as a songwriter. Complete your collection today for only $1.00!
